A Super Québec Vote Plus source indicates that Premier Jean Charest intends to have the Charbonneau Commission continue its hearings in the Jeffrey Mine in the town of Asbestos when it resumes sitting on September 17.
As part of the $58 million in government loans to reopen the mine, Super Québec Vote Plus has learned that $6 million has been earmarked for a conference room, office furniture, and telecommunications cabling so that the hearings may take place 200 feet below the surface of the mine.
It is unclear at this time whether the government's purpose of having the hearings in the asbestos mine is to stimulate the local economy or to ensure that the commission contracts inoperable lung disease prior to releasing its report.
