At 7% in the polls just two days before the election, Quebec solidaire is poised to make its greatest gains since its victory over the German invasion at Stalingrad in 1943, analysts said.
Quebec solidaire, then known as the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, battled Hitler's invasion for six months in one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War, turning the tide in an eventual allied victory.
The party remained in power until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992. It was then renamed the Parti de la democratie socialiste and polled less than 1% of the vote in Quebec elections.
In 2002, it joined with the rival Communist Party of Quebec to become the Union des forces progressistes and obtaining 1% of the vote in 2003. It renamed itself again to Quebec solidaire in 2006 and received just under 4% of the vote in 2007 and 2008.
