TORONTO: The usually virulently federalist, right-wing Sun News Network and the entire chain of Sun newspapers unexpectedly endorsed the Parti québécois for Québec's upcoming general election today.
"We believe that the Parti québécois is the only party that will ensure the Sun News Network's values of small government, low taxes and pan-Canadian unity," said the confused anchor, reading a prepared statement.
"Quebec sovereignty and the survival of the French language is the most important issue to Albertans and the Parti Quebecois is most able to defend these issues," said this morning's editorial in the Calgary Sun.
"Only a PQ majority will ensure that Bill 101 can be strengthened to defend the French language against an onslaught of English in our daily lives," said Toronto Sun columnist, Ezra Levant.
When asked by reporters if the unexpected endorsement was related to Sun News Network's owner, Pierre Karl Péladeau, announcing himself as a PQ candidate, Sun News Network Executives said, "Um, er..." then mumbled something before walking to their cars.
